I have always love dogs since I was a little girl but I love the Jack Russell breed the most. Not only are Jack Russell terriers so cute but they are also so full of energy. I guess their energy must have come from their breed which was originally meant for hunting small games such as foxes which as you know runs very fast!
By the way, would you believe it? The Jack Russell terrier actually derived its name from the Reverend John Russell, a parson and hunting enthusiast born in England in 1795. Although a man of the cloth, the Reverend John Russell was a passionate fox hunter.
In his final year of university at Oxford, he bought a small white and tan terrier bitch named Trump which he used for a breeding program. He wanted to develop a terrier with high stamina for fox hunting as well as having the courage and formation to chase out foxes that had gone to ground. On top of that the dog must also be without the aggressiveness that would result in them harming their prey the fox, which was considered unsporting.

As a result of that breeding program, the Jack Russell terrier was born. The terriers bred by John Russell were well respected for these qualities and when he died in 1883, his terriers were taken on by other hunt enthusiasts. Just in case you didn’t know, that was a little bit of history for you.
Coming back to present, remember the “actor” dog Eddie from the sitcom Fraiser? Eddie, like most “actor” animals you see in sitcoms and Walt Disney movies are very well trained by professional trainers. As such, do not be misled into believing that when you adopt a Jack Russell, it will just grow up naturally into another “Eddie”. Like most dogs, your Jack Russell puppy has to undergo proper dog training in order for it to have good behavioral qualities when it grows into an adult dog.
Are Jack Russell Terriers Good As Pets?
In spite of the emphasis on its ability and desire to hunt, Jack Russell terriers are also excellent house dogs and children’s pets. They have a unique sense of humor, are clean in their habits and are sweet and affectionate to people. However they do require plenty of exercise. When there is more than one, they have a tendency to go off hunting on their own if not fenced. The deep instincts to get down in the ground may also cause some Jack Russell terriers to be passionate diggers; as such knowing how to groom your Jack Russell is important. Also as important is to make sure that your Jack Russell is potty trained. However they are happy companions and their many owners are delighted with them especially when their JRT has undergone proper Jack Russell terrier training.
